Hours after a series of blasts hit a prayer convention centre in Kerala’s Kochi, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said his state is always on alert to avert any untoward incidents.

As many as three blasts, the first at around 9.30 am and two others within the next 10 minutes, were reported at the convention centre where the Christian denomination Jehovah’s Witnesses was holding a prayer meeting.

At least one person was killed and more than 50 others were injured, a few of them critically, in the blasts for which preliminary investigation shows that an improvised explosive device was used, officials have said.

While speaking to reporters soon after arriving at Nagpur airport, Fadnavis said, “We will receive the details about the incident in Kerala. We don’t have to issue separate advisories for alerts as such. Our police force and administration are always alert, especially when we have important cities like Mumbai and Pune”.

Fadnavis also spoke about Maratha activist Manoj Jarange Patil’s statement that the government should respond to reservation demands before his voice is shut.

The deputy chief minister told reporters, “It is my ardent appeal that he (Jarasange Patil) should not ignore his health. After all, life is precious. Those who are with him should also ensure his health does not fail.

“CM Eknath Shinde is closely monitoring the Maratha reservation issue. He has already reassured the government’s commitment to reservation. Jarasange Patil should show the trust in the CM,” he added.
