The MRA Marg police in south Mumbai has arrested a history-sheeter for allegedly robbing the wife of an official working with the Japan consulate. The police said the woman and the official, both Japanese nationals, were walking near Horniman circle at Kala Ghoda in Fort when a bike-borne man snatched her purse and escaped.

An official from the Mumbai police confirmed the development and said the accused, identified as Mohamed Arbaaz Abdul Sattar Siddiqui, was arrested within three hours after the complaint was lodged.

According to the police officials, the Japanese couple were in south Mumbai to witness the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi on Tuesday.

“Siddiqui, who was on his bike, went towards her and snatched her bag. He then escaped with it,” said a police officer adding that it contained cash of around 10,000.

The police said the couple then lodged a complaint at MRA Marg police station after which the accused was traced after scrutinising CCTV footage. “We have arrested the accused and recovered all the valuables that were stolen from the Japanese national,” said an official.
