A 17-year-old boy was detained after he stabbed a 43-year-old man to death with a screwdriver in Mumbai’s Kandivali on Sunday morning.
Police said the teenage boy was angry with the man, identified as Abdul Rahim, as he used to tease him.
According to police, Rahim, an autorickshaw driver, lived with his 75-year-old mother and two sons in a chawl. He would drink regularly and also had other addictions. Police said due to his addiction, the residents of the chawl often passed comments on him and he had altercations with them. Rahim’s mother had also warned him against this behaviour.
Police said around 11 am on Sunday, the boy, who lives in the same chawl, stabbed Rahim under the neck, on his right armpit and on the rear side of his head with a screwdriver.
On receiving information, a police vehicle reached the spot and rushed the injured to a hospital. Rahim was undergoing treatment at the ICU, but died on Monday afternoon, said police.
Rahim’s mother Mumtaj Malik, after visiting her son at the hospital, went to the police station to lodge a complaint against the boy. There, she discovered the police had already taken the minor into custody.
“During questioning, the minor in front of me told the police that Rahim had teased him…he got angry over this and stabbed Rahim with a screwdriver. Rahim’s son was also there at the police station and he too corroborated the minor boy’s version,” said Malik in her statement.
The police detained the boy on Monday night and booked him under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC. A police officer said the boy was produced him before a child welfare committee and later sent to a correction home.
