The Mumbai police registered an FIR against a 28-year-old man for allegedly cheating during the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) recruitment exam Saturday.
The accused has been identified as Shubham Patil, 28, a Thane resident. The police suspect he was taking photos on his mobile phone of the computer screen on which he was taking the exam and sending it to someone outside who was feeding him the answers. The phone was retrieved from the toilet bin at the exam centre after Patil had allegedly hidden it there.
The incident happened at the exam centre in Aurum IT park in Powai, and the alleged malpractice came to light after a supervisor suspected something dubious around 9.40 am. She was monitoring lab 30, where 18 candidates were seated. She noticed what appeared to be a mobile phone near one of the computers in the exam hall, and she approached Patil, who was taking the exam.
When he saw her approaching, he became nervous and allegedly left the hall, claiming he had to go to the washroom urgently. The supervisor escalated the situation to her superiors, but Patil initially denied possessing any mobile phone.
After a thorough search yielded no results, the security team checked the washroom area and discovered a Google Pixel 6 phone hidden in a dustbin. Patil then confessed that the phone belonged to him.
Upon unlocking the device, officials found 17 photographs of the computer screen on which he was giving the exam.
The supervisor alerted the local Powai police, who booked Patil for allegedly violating examination protocols and attempting to engage in unfair practices during a government recruitment examination.
