While reconstituting it’s working committee, the Congress party on Sunday included senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan in the party’s top decision making body on Sunday.
While Chavan was included in the committee, Congress MLA Balasaheb Thorat, the legislative group leader in the Assembly, was removed.
Apart from Chavan, other state leaders included in the CWC (Congress Working Committee) are Mukul Wasnik, Avinash Pande, Manikrao Thakare, Chandrakant Handore, Praniti Shinde, Yashomati Thakur and Rajani Patil.
The CWC has been reconstituted at a time when the party is preparing for multiple elections, in the state as well Lok Sabha polls next year.
Four-time MLA from Nanded, Ashok Chavan, said he was honoured to be included in the CWC. “It is with great humility that I accept this responsibility and I commit to working tirelessly towards the betterment of the Congress Party and the nation. I am fully dedicated to upholding the party’s values and principles, and to contributing to its growth and success,” he tweeted on X.
“I look forward to working closely with fellow colleagues and the Congress leadership to address the challenges that lie ahead and to chart a path towards a brighter future for the country,” he added.
Besides the Gandhi family (Sonia, Rahul and Priyanka) and party president Mallikarjun Kharge, the committee now has new entrants – Sachin Pilot, Shashi Tharoor, Deepa Das Munshi and Syed Nasser Hussain.
This comes months after the party had decided to not hold elections to the CWC, at a meeting of the steering committee not attended by members of the Gandhi family. In the February meeting, it was unanimously decided to authorise Kharge to nominate members.
The list of CWC members released Sunday includes senior party leaders like former PM Manmohan Singh, former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram, and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh. Other prominent names include former Kerala CM AK Antony, former Madhya Pradesh CM Digvijaya Singh, former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar, former Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi, Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi and Congress general secretary KC Venugopal.
