As Mumbai continue to experience heavy rain, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the city has already received more than 50% of the average monthly quota for July within just nine days of this month.
According to the figures, the Santacruz observatory has recorded 494 mm of rainfall so far, which is 57% of 855.7 mm, which is the required quota of average rain in July.
It is pertinent to note that monsoon onset in Mumbai took place on June 25, which was delayed by nearly two weeks.
Irrespective of this, the city has been recording heavy to very heavy rain and the IMD’s Santacruz observatory has also surpassed the 1000 mm rainfall of this season by recording 1,031 mm to date. Also in June, the city had surpassed the average monthly quota as it recorded 550 mm rainfall against its monthly quota of 537 mm.
Meanwhile, IMD officials maintained that in the ongoing week, the city will experience lesser rains compared to the last week. In the weekly bulletin between July 9 and 12, the IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall.
The weather bureau has not issued any yellow or orange alert for the maximum city this week so far, however for districts like Pune, Raigad, Sindhudurg, Akola, Amravati and Nagpur, there is a yellow alert for this week as well indicating heavy to very heavy rain.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, the IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded 9 mm of rain, while the coastal observatory at Colaba recorded 6 mm of rain.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) automatic weather stations have recorded 11.17 mm of rain in the island city and Eastern suburbs each, while 12.19 mm was recorded in the western suburbs.
