Changing city: High quality AI cameras to spot traffic violations on Atal Setu ‘MTHL’, India’s longest sea bridge

Sewri Nhava Sheva Sealink, the 21.5-km India’s longest sea bridge, that is aimed to significantly reduce the travel time between Navi Mumbai and south Mumbai was launched by PM Modi on January 12.

Over 374 cameras having high-end features, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) system, stand out as a cutting-edge technology in monitoring the traffic of the newly launched Sewri Nhava Sheva Sealink officially named ‘Atal Bihari Vajpayee Mumbai Trans Harbour Link’.

The 21.5-km India’s longest sea bridge that is aimed to significantly reduce the travel time between Navi Mumbai and south Mumbai was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 12.

The state-of-the-art AI technology-aided cameras will help detect even the smallest traffic violations. Besides, the pan-tilt zoom cameras installed on the bridge are capable of giving a 360-degree view of the vehicles moving along the bridge.

The project is implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

Features:

– 130 CCTV Surveillance System on MTHL

– 36 Under Bridge Surveillance System

– 190 Artificial Intelligence-based video analytics

– 6 Emergency calling boxes

– 12 Section speed cameras

– Vehicle-actuated speed display

Total Length of the Bridge: 21.5 km (16km on sea)

Cost of the project: Rs 520 crore (approximately)

Agency appointed: Strabag Austria

Role: Operations and maintenance, including collection of toll

Scope of work in overall project works:

– Construction of toll plaza

– Complete electrification of Sealink

– System, CCTV cameras procurement and operation

– Operations and maintenance

– Civil work, which includes Operation and Control Centre construction, RCC road, etc

MMRDA Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee:

“The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) OCC set up at Chirle is a state-of-the-art infrastructure. The pan-tilt zoom cameras have been placed giving a 360 degree view of movement of traffic on MTHL round the clock. Besides, the cameras are also equipped with a new age Artificial Intelligence system which can detect different types of traffic violations– speed, rash driving and the visuals are directly being sent to the police for further action. Besides, there are cameras below the bridge also to keep a watch in the water area. New technology is in use and in case of an emergency police are alerted immediately,” Mukherjee elaborated.
