Incessant rainfall and cloudburst have flooded several low-lying areas in Maharashtra’s Nagpur, prompting Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to direct the district administration and the police to provide necessary assistance to those affected. At least 140 people have been shifted from flooded areas to safer locations.
The state government has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Nagpur.
The overflowing Ambazari lake and Nag River caused water to gush into residential and commercial areas in several parts of the city. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed to rescue stranded people from low-lying areas.
“There was heavy rain since late night. In a short span of four hours, the city received more than 100 mm of rain… We are closely monitoring the situation and our priority is to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of citizens,” Fadnavis said.
According to information shared by the district administration, heavy rain lashed the city well past Friday midnight. By 2 am on Saturday, people in various Ganesh pandals across Nagpur city noticed that the water level was sharply rising. Water from the Ambazari lake, which is the city’s biggest, overflowed into open streets and nearby localities. The overflowing Nag River also led to waterlogging in its vicinity.
The tracks at Nagpur railway station were submerged and waterlogging at the station caused much inconvenience to passengers. In the commercial centre of Burdi, overnight showers caused water to enter narrow bylanes and shops in the marketplace.
Although water has started receding, the district administration has urged people to exercise caution. People have been advised not to step out of their homes unless there is an emergency.
