Heavy rain cripples Mumbai: traffic goes haywire as subways, roads closed

Traffic went haywire after heavy rain led to severe waterlogging in low-lying areas in Mumbai on Monday, with the Eastern Freeway and Western Express Highway being affected, and several subways, roads and bridges closed.

“Subways in low-lying areas like Poisar subway was shut for traffic to avoid vehicles getting stuck,” an official said. The Andheri subway was also shut by afternoon after two feet water accummulated.

By evening, the Elphinstone bridge was shut after waterlogging in Parel and he Mankhurd Tunnel at Maharashtra Nagar was also closed.

At some places, tree fall and malfunctioning signals also led to traffic congestion. Malfunctioning of a traffic signal at Kandivali east and tree fall incidents added to the chaos.

As per the Mumbai traffic police, the road from MGR Chowk to Kane Nagar in Antop Hill, was also closed.

The Andheri subway, Lokhandwala Complex and Veera Desai Road in Andheri were inundated, affecting traffic movement.

The Western Express Highway in front of Oberoi Mall (Dindoshi) was also affected.

At Kings Circle Gandhi Market (Matunga), approximately two-and-a-half to three feet of water had accumulated, leading to traffic diversion from Aurora Junction. Commuters also faced problems due to waterlogging in Gandhi Market Sion area, where stranded schoolchildren were rescued by police.
