In the season of discounts when e-commerce platforms are flooded with orders, a major platform was duped by a Haryana-based gang that changed barcode stickers. One of the accused had earlier worked for the platform and knew loopholes that could be used to dupe them.
Laxmikant Salunkhe, in-charge of Unit VIII of the Mumbai crime branch that busted the gang said that the accused would order two things – one expensive and one cheap at a Mumbai address. In this case, they ordered expensive camera lenses and a camera totally worth Rs 34 lakh and a mixer grinder worth Rs 2,500 at the same address.
They would have a person working as a delivery boy at the platform who would be asked to deliver the product.
The officer said the accused would meet three other accused outside the delivery address. They would exchange the bar code stickers identifying the product on the box. So, the camera would be identified as a mixer grinder and vice versa, the officer said.
“They would then return the box containing the camera and get a refund of Rs 34 lakh. By the time the e-commerce officials would realise that the camera box has a mixer, the accused would have switched off the number and fled. They would also have the camera in the other box which they would sell-off,” Salunke said.
Based on a tip-off about the accused, a team from Unit VIII laid a trap and nabbed Haryana residents Pankajkumar Jindal (32), Vijaykumar Saharan (32), Shamshersingh Aalan (32) and Sumatkumar Sahu (29) who hails from Chhattisgarh.
An officer said they are questioning the accused to find out if they were involved in any other crimes.
