The Mumbai police on Monday approached a special court pointing out that following “violation of conditions”, the bail granted to MP Navneet Rana and her husband and MLA Ravi Rana stands cancelled. The police sought the court’s direction to issue a non-bailable arrest warrant against the Ranas. Subsequently, the court issued a notice to the legislator couple asking them to appear before it during the next hearing on May 18 to respond to the Mumbai police application.
Meanwhile, speaking to mediapersons, the duo said they would approach Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to raise the issue of their alleged ill-treatment by Maharashtra authorities during their recent jail stint. Navneet Rana said that Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, “who back-stabbed the BJP”, should not talk and teach the couple about principles.
“We are going to Delhi today (Monday) and will meet all the leaders who respect women. I am going to meet the Prime Minister, (Union) home minister and Lok Sabha Speaker and tell them how we were ill-treated from a lock-up to jail,” said Navneet Rana, her husband by her side.
Later in the day, after meeting Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in Delhi, Navneet Rana said, “I briefed him in detail on the harassment I was subjected to in prison…I also indicated that police were working under pressure from the MVA government.” She added, “The Speaker has promised to look into the matter…”
The two had been arrested on charges including sedition in the wake of a row over recitation of Hanuman Chalisa at the residence of Maharashtra CM Thackeray. A special court had on Wednesday allowed bail to the duo and directed their release on a bond of Rs 50,000 each.
The plea filed by the state government through the police inspector of Khar police station, moved by special public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat on Monday, claimed that the couple had violated the restriction on speaking to the media about the case and that Navneet had also issued threats.
Meanwhile, the Ranas dismissed the allegation that they committed contempt of court by speaking to the media.
