Maharashtra school education department has announced a major teacher recruitment drive for a total of 21,678 posts in 1,258 schools across the state, including zilla parishad (ZP), municipal corporations, city councils and private-run schools, from classes 1 to 12.
The process will be through the Pavitra portal – a technology based centralised platform for recruitment process to ensure transparency, according to a circular issued by the office of Commissioner of Education Maharashtra, Suraj Mandhare, on Monday.
The circular stated that the posts, including those under reservation, were finalised by November 2023. However, the process was delayed due to queries raised on the recruitment drives, during sessions of legislative assembly. As the drive is finally announced, it has opened up 80 per cent of total available posts.
According to teachers, even as there have been processes to fill vacancies, the number of posts was less than 1,000. “This is after many years, the government has announced teacher recruitment on such a significant number of posts, through the Pavitra portal,” said a teacher.
According to the circular, 2,39,730 candidates registered for Teachers Aptitude and Intelligence Test (TAIT) held in February/March 2023 however 2,16,443 appeared for it. These candidates and those who appeared in the 2022 exam will be taking part in this recruitment drive.
With a total of 18,373, Marathi medium schools have the highest number of available teachers’ posts in this recruitment drive. This is followed by 1,850 posts in Urdu medium schools. While English medium schools have 931 posts and Hindi medium schools have 410 posts. The remaining five schools have less than 100 posts available for this recruitment with Tamil, Bengali and Telugu medium schools having only single digit posts open to be filled.
There are a total of 35 ZP schools with 12,522 posts, 18 municipal corporations schools with 2,951 posts, 82 city council schools with 477 posts and 1,123 private schools with 5,728 posts.
