The Maharashtra government has proposed to develop the 200-feet monolith column of black basalt rock, Gilbert Hill in Andheri (West), into a tourist spot on the lines of Burj Khalifa in Dubai, said Mangal Prabhat Lodha, guardian minister of Mumbai (suburbs), on Sunday.
Identified as a grade II heritage structure, Gilbert Hill was formed from molten lava around 66 million years ago. At present, the cliff and the base of the hill is a landslide-prone area, encroached by slum-dwellers.
Speaking at the inaugural event of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) newly constructed swimming pool at Gilbert Hill, Lodha said, “The Burj Khalifa in Dubai is a popular tourist destination thronged by tourists from around the world. Gilbert Hill will be developed to a tourist spot on similar lines.” The swimming pool is named after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and is the tenth public swimming pool in Mumbai.
Adding that the entire area will be transformed in the next one year, Lodha said that an elevator will be built by the Public Works Department (PWD) for devotees visiting the temple situated at the hilltop.
In December, 2020, the local civic ward office along with historians carried out a site inspection to chalk out a possibility for transforming this hill into a tourist destination.
Meanwhile, civic officials said that three new swimming pools will be opened for Mumbaikars at Worli, Vikhroli and Andheri (East). The BMC in a statement said that the annual membership at the Shivaji Maharaj swimming pool will cost Rs 8,410 for adults while women can get membership at 25 per cent discounted rate. Students below 15 years can get membership at Rs 4,370 and annually, 2,750 members will be issued membership.
