The commission probing the Adarsh scam on Tuesday questioned Kailash Gidwani, the son of one of the chief promoters of the society,Kanhaiyalal Gidwani,on his society membership and sources of income.

During his examination, the commission took note of his application for membership to the society. In the application, the family income of Kailash, whose father is an ex-Congress MLC,was shown “nil”. When questioned on this,Kailash told the panel,“The statement regarding family income…is factually incorrect.” He,however, said his monthly income was correctly shown as Rs 10,500.

Subsequently,in response to questioning by the senior counsel for the commission,Dipan Merchant,he said: “My father informed me to become a member of the Adarsh Co-operative Housing Society.” He also told the commission that he had not even visited the site of the building before applying for membership.

Interestingly,Kailash also said he could not recollect from which bank account the initial entrance fee for membership to the society was paid and who filled up his application.

Also,in a significant admission,he accepted that he took an “advance” of Rs 5 lakh from Pune-based builder Jayant Shah. Jayant’s son Malav, who is also a member of the society, had also previously stated that he “borrowed” Rs 10.95 lakh from his father.

Kanhaiyalal is accused by the CBI of using his personal influence with public servants in the state government and offering them membership in return for granting favours to the society. Two of his sons,Kailash and Amit, own flats in the building, which is located in the upmarket Cuffe Parade locality.

Kailash’s deposition will continue on Wednesday.
