A 55-year-old garment businessman based in Khar, upset over his deteriorating health following an accident three months ago, allegedly attempted suicide by jumping off the Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL) early on Monday. Tikam Makhija, however, could not be located by the Coast Guard on Monday. Navy helicopters, too, were pressed into service to trace the body.

An officer said that Makhija had sustained head injuries in a bike accident three months back. Ever since, he had been suffering from health complications and found it difficult to get sleep. He was frustrated and unhappy with his health and told his family as much, the officer said. The officer said they suspect that it was on account of this that he drove to the BWSL in the wee hours of Monday and jumped into the sea.

DCP (zone III) Akbar Pathan said that Coast Guard officials and Navy helicopters were used in the bid to trace Makhija but to no avail. “The operations will continue on Monday,” he added, and said that they did not suspect any foul play.
