Veteran Gandhian, socialist and freedom fighter G G Parikh passed away in Mumbai on Thursday morning. He was 100.
“We have lost a great soul this day. The Saint of the Socialists has left us on the very day, 2 October of the Jayanti of the Mahatma whom he venerated, whose values imbibed and strived to live by. Dr. G G, as we all lovingly called him had just passed the milestone of a 100 years last December 2024,” a statement from social activists Tushar Gandhi and Firoze Mithiborewala said.
“In GG’s life, we have all drawn inspiration, knowledge and wisdom from the time we shared with him. We are shaken, sorrowful, but yet draw strength from Dr GG’s plentiful courage and the path of struggle that he taught us,” it added, saying Parikh was among “the last of the generation of freedom fighters”.
Born in Gujarat’s Surendra Nagar (formerly Wadhwan camp) on December 30, 1924, Parikh underwent his education in Saurashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Mumbai. He pursued a career as a medical practitioner.
During his life, he was imprisoned both during the Quit India movement and the Emergency period. Parikh’s commitment to social causes remained unwavering throughout his life. He actively participated in the student movement during his student days and held the position of the president of the Bombay unit of the Students Congress in 1947 when India gained independence. He also made significant contributions to the trade union movement and played a role in promoting consumer cooperatives.
In 1961, Parikh was among the individuals who played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Yusuf Meherally Centre near Pen in Raigad district of Maharashtra, and continued to serve the organisation in various capacities. He also oversaw the Janata, a socialist weekly, starting from the early 1950s.
Parikh’s journey also includes his involvement in the student movement in Saurashtra and Mumbai since 1940, a ten-month imprisonment during the Quit India movement in 1942, promotion of student cooperatives and consumer cooperatives, becoming a cadet member of the Congress Socialist Party in 1946, and an enduring commitment to the socialist movement.
