Four incidents of minor fire in toilets of 3 trains reported at CST

No passenger was injured. The affected coach was detached for investigation.

Four incidents of fire in three outstation trains were reported between 5 and 6.10 pm on Wednesday at CST station. No passenger sustained injuries in any of the fires, said a CR spokesperson. All the four fires were reported in the toilets of different coaches of the trains.

Ruling out the fires as a mere co-incidence, a senior railway officer, who inspected the spot, said, “Somebody deliberately set the acrylic sheets of the ceiling of toilets on fire. In all the incidents, the fire occurred in the same manner. With no electric wires on the ceiling of toilets, the possibility of short circuit can be ruled out.”

The first fire was reported at 5.03 pm in the second class chair car coach of 12123 Mumbai to Pune Deccan Queen, which was scheduled to depart at 5.15 pm. The train was stationed at platform number 8.

Around 5.43 pm, two incidents of fire were reported inside the toilets of two coaches of 11023 Mumbai to Kohlapur Sahayadri Express, which was stationed at platform 9. While authorities were attending to the sudden fires, a fourth fire was reported inside one of the toilets of S3 coach of 12809 Mumbai to Kolkata Howrah Mail, stationed at platform 15.

Narendra Patil, Chief Public Relations Officer, Central Railway said, “Fire was reported in the second class chair car of Deccan Queen at 5.03 pm. Immediately OHE was switched off and fire tenders were called in. No passenger was injured. The affected coach was detached for investigation. There was also incidents of smoke emanating from two coaches of Sahyadri Express at 5.43 pm and Mumbai-Howrah Mail at 6.10 pm. All the fires were immediately brought under control”. Senior railway officials rushed to the spot and also looked at CCTV footage to determine any possibility of sabotage.
