Four men posing as policemen allegedly duped a senior citizen of Rs 1.17 lakh in Goregaon (West) on Friday. Bangur Nagar police said,the victim,K Ramachandran,72,had gone for a morning walk around 7.30 am when the incident took place.
Police said a man in casual clothes approached Ramachandran saying that he was a policeman. He told him that his senior officer,who was standing nearby,had summoned him. The victim then walked towards the trio . They were not in uniform.
The trio said they were deployed in the area after a senior citizens murder. They also said that there was a spate of robberies in which the elderly were targeted,and asked the victim to remove his jewellery and keep it in a piece of paper as a precautionary measure. Senior police inspector R Bagul said the victim believed them and removed his gold chain,bracelet and ring collectively worth Rs 1.17 lakh and kept it in a piece of paper. The imposter then kept the paper in the victims pocket without allowing him to touch it. They then left the spot on two motor cycles.
When he checked the paper,he found a stone instead of his ornaments. A cheating case has been registered. We are also scanning the CCTV recordings of the area, he said.
