Additional Solicitor General of India Anil C Singh has a new responsibility, looking into legal matters of Maharashtra as Advocate General. Following Sunil Manohar quitting as state Advocate General, Singh, who will hold the additional charge, will have to balance legal issues of the Centre and Maharashtra.

He had earlier served with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation as a special counsel.

Singh has handled several legal issues relating to Central government departments, after he was appointed the Additional Solicitor General in July, 2014. Singh represented the Union government when a PIL, demanding better preparedness at airports during the Ebola outbreak, was filed in the Bombay High Court.

Singh’s legal career spans over three decades.

A lawyer who has worked with Singh said he has a knack of handling public interest litigations. He said that before he became the government’s legal representative, Singh had fought many cases against the government.

“He handled cases pertaining to development, protection of forest land, issues over road repair in the city, and other PILs. He enjoys accepting challenges and is ready to do that now,” the lawyer said.

Singh was all praise for his predecessor. “Sunil Manohar is a very good human being and extremely competent. During his tenure, he defended the state government in utmost clinical fashion. I would be calling on him, and asking for his guidance whenever needed,” he said.
