The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has collected penalty of Rs 4.7 lakh from several vehicles in the city over the past three days for flouting air pollution mitigation norms. The civic body also washed 54 kilometres of roads in the city on Sunday.
Mumbai’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) reeled under moderate category at 145 on Sunday, while several areas recorded poor AQI. Chembur had the worse AQI of 302, followed by 274 in Colaba, and 206 in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Worli recorded a good AQI of 88.
Between November 3 and 5, the BMC recovered Rs 4.71 lakh from vehicles that were penalised for transporting debris without covering them and dumping them openly in public places. “The fines were imposed to ensure dust mitigation guidelines are followed strictly by those who are not adhering by it,” said the official.
On October 20, The Indian Express started publishing its series “Death by Breath”, highlighting how man-made issues such as unmonitored construction works and garbage burning were contributing to the city’s worsening air quality and its impact on health of the citizens. Following this, the BMC issued air pollution mitigation guidelines.
The civic body also said that between November 3 and 5, total 154 kilometres of roads were cleaned that includes 54 km washed on Sunday. Civic officials said that 657 km of roads will be cleaned in total, for which 121 tankers were deployed.
