Fire breaks out in Kurla scrap market; one injured

A fire broke out in Kurla West scrap market on Saturday that spread to nearly eleven shops in the area. While no casualties were reported, a 25-year-old fireman was injured during the course of operations.

The fireman was identified as Suraj Tanaki Nakashe (25) and was taken to Kurla’s Bhabha hospital after sustaining injuries to his left knee.

The incident was reported at 4.19 pm at the scrap market near the Equinox building along Kurla Khadi. The fire was declared level 2 at 4.45 pm.

According to senior civic officials, the fire was confined to the electric installations, wiring, plastic material, stock of chemical drums and other miscellaneous items stored in nearly 11 shops in an area spanning 100X200 square feet of the market.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade deployed four engines, six jumbo tankers and two fire tankers.

The fire was extinguished at 8.30 pm. Meanwhile, medical officials at the civic-run hospital said that Nakashe was discharged upon treatment.

On December 28, a fire broke out through scrap godowns in Kurla, destroying 50-60 units even as no injuries were reported.
