‘Error’ list: Kasab an injured, got money

Three years and a court conviction notwithstanding, the Mumbai City Collector’s website put out a list which identified lone arrested Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab as an injured in the 26/11 terror attack who had been paid ex gratia compensation.

Three years and a court conviction notwithstanding, the Mumbai City Collector’s website put out a list which identified lone arrested Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab as an injured in the 26/11 terror attack who had been paid ex gratia compensation.

When this was brought to the attention of officials by Newsline, they said it was a “bona-fide” error on part of the staff who seem to have just “cut-pasted” names.

In the list published until Wednesday,Kasab was identified as a terrorist who had been paid the ex gratia of the state government and money from the Prime Minister Relief Fund. Considering the unprecedented nature of the attacks, state government and Central government had increased the compensation given to injured and deceased in the attacks. As per the state government directive, those who sustained minor injuries are paid Rs 10,000. There was compensation announced through the PM relief Fund as well.

After questions were raised regarding the compensation being offered to Kasab by the government for his injuries,Collector Chandrashekhar Oak said the name had been put up due to a “bona-fide” error by staff which prepared the list. “The error has been corrected and a new list has been put up. No compensation has been paid to him for the injuries. It was a bona-fide mistake,” said Oak.

Kasab shot at police officials at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus,Cama Hospital and Rang Bhavan Lane and was injured in his hand on November 26. He was taken to the B L Y Nair hospital and administered basic medical aid. Kasab has since been convicted with a death sentence on four counts and life sentence on five counts for his role in the terror attack.

However,on Thursday evening, the updated and corrected list on the website still identified Kasab as an injured person, but it erased the remarks of payment being made to him about the ex gratia.
