The Vanrai police on Thursday arrested an employee of a corporate gifting company for allegedly duping the firm of Rs 5.75 crore by using forged purchase orders for 7,000 grams of gold coin and embezzling the coins for personal gains. The accused, identified as Sunil Gupta, 44, was produced in the court and remanded in police custody till October 7. The police have not recovered the misappropriated coins yet.
According to the police, complainant Naresh Jain, who runs a corporate gifting company for two decades, having his office currently in Goregaon (East), claimed in the FIR that he knew the accused for the past 4-5 years. Two years ago, Gupta approached him stating that he could help get bulk orders for his corporate gifting business. Jain then rented a shop in Goregaon (East) and opened a branch in the name of ‘Brand Harmony’ and hired Gupta to look after the business of the particular office.
Police said that as per the complaint, as Jain started trusting Gupta following the growth in business and profits, he gave Gupta access to the company’s email accounts and passwords.
The police said the complainant alleged that, “a year ago, Gupta claimed that he got an order from a pharmaceutical firm, which wanted to provide gold coins for corporate gifting to its customers. The suspect forged the purchase order of 3,400 grams of 24 carat gold. The owner of the firm believed him and gold coins worth Rs 2.47 crore were handed over to Gupta for delivery to the pharmaceutical firm.”
“In March 2025, Gupta again claimed that the same pharmaceutical firm had placed an order and this time wanted 3,600 grams gold coins worth Rs 3.18 crore for corporate gifting. Gupta said the firm will clear the payment of both the consignments together,” the police officer said as alleged by Jain. This time Gupta again forged the purchase order and gold coins were handed over to him for delivery, added the official.
But when the payment did not come, Jain started enquiring about payment and suspected foul play when Gupta started giving excuses. Jain then contacted the firm and learnt that the order was not placed by the firm and they have not accepted gold delivery in the last one year, said the official.
Jain then filed a complaint with the Vanrai police station in July and the police registered a case against Gupta on September 20. He was arrested on Thursday and remanded in police custody till October 7, said senior inspector Girish Bane of the Vanrai police station.
