Seven undertrials in the Elgaar Parishad case went on a hunger strike on Friday after not being produced before the special court in the past three occasions.

Rona Wilson, Sudhir Dhawale, Surendra Gadling, Mahesh Raut, Sagar Gorkhe, Ramesh Gaichor and Hany Babu, who are lodged at Taloja Central Jail, were not produced before the court on Friday. They were also not produced for the previous hearings on October 9 and September 30. They also could not be produced via videoconference on Friday due to technical issues, their lawyers said.

The accused during previous proceedings had raised this issue of non-production before the court. They had said that despite a Government Resolution through which a certain set number of police officials of the Navi Mumbai police have been reserved for bringing the accused to court, often reasons are given to the court that the police are busy with other duties including security.

The accused had said that as some of them, including Gadling, appear in-person, and not being produced delays any applications they want to file before the court.
