An 83-year-old woman died after she came under the wheels of a BEST bus in the Sakinaka area on Wednesday. The police have arrested the bus driver for allegedly causing death by negligent and dangerous driving.
The deceased has been identified as Chaturadevi Jaiswal, a resident of Jari Mari, Sakinaka.
As per the police, on Wednesday afternoon Jaiswal had come out for a stroll after lunch. “At around 1.30 pm while she was crossing the road, a BEST bus rammed into her following which she lost her balance and came under the rear wheels of the bus (route number-319 registration no. MH01-DR-6308) on the northbound stretch of Andheri-Kurla road, Jari Mari,” said a police officer.
Jaiswal sustained serious injuries on her head, and was rushed to Rajawadi hospital, Ghatkopar, where doctors declared her dead.
Based on Jaiswal’s grand-daughter Priyanka Jaiswal’s complaint, police have arrested the accused 35-year-old bus driver Vishal Dhagade.
The accused has been arrested under sections 279 (rash and negligent driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code and 184 (dangerous driving) of the Motor Vehicle Act. Dhagade was later released on bail, said a policeman at Sakinaka police station.
