The Adani-led Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Ltd (DRPPL) has sought land parcels from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) at Bandra Kurla Complex(BKC).
DRPPL in joint venture with Maharashtra government is the special purpose vehicle(SPV) established to carry out the redevelopment project of Dharavi.
According to a DRPPL official, it has written a letter to the MMRDA seeking 17 acres of land which will be used as a casting yard to keep machinery, due to its proximity to Dharavi.
An official from MMRDA said that a proposal needs to be submitted to the state government for further cost consideration, only after which necessary action can be taken.
However, since land value at BKC is too high, the authority is sceptical about handing over the same. As per a government notification, if the land is given then it will be at 25 per cent of the ready reckoner rate. MMRDA is currently carrying out over Rs 3 lakh crore projects and it has borrowed funds from several financial institutions.
Usually, the land monetisation is useful to fund such infrastructure projects.
Dharavi is known to be the Asia’s biggest slum cluster of Mumbai.
The state had envisaged that this area will be transformed into a cluster of high-rises with improved urban infrastructure. It entailed resettling 68,000 people, including slum dwellers and those with commercial establishments.
