Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday announced that his party will approach the Supreme Court against Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar’s order declaring Shiv Sena under Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as the real party. Soon after the verdict, Uddhav Thackeray addressed a press conference at his residence Matoshree, where he trashed the verdict and attacked the Speaker for violating the mandate set by the Supreme Court. Excerpts from the press interaction:
The Supreme Court had given clear instructions on which points were to be considered by the Speaker but all were violated. The order shows that he does not care for the Supreme Court only because a ‘mahashakti’ stands behind. He has not disqualified anyone, which was the core issue… He gave the order on whom does Shiv Sena belong to, based on the Election Commission’s order, which has been challenged in the Supreme Court. He has disrespected the Supreme Court by taking undue advantage of protection he enjoys as Speaker. Democracy has been violated, raising questions on the existence of the Supreme Court itself.
On approaching Supreme Court
If a defamation suit cannot be filed, we feel that the court should take suomotu cognisance because any such order can be a precedent in future cases. We are going to approach the Supreme Court against this order. The Speaker merely sought more time. As we will approach the apex court, we expect a decision before the elections as these people (BJP) want to go ahead with the election. The order is not as per the law. This will not sustain in the apex court.
On making him invalid as Shiv Sena chief
That was not his perogative and the court did not ask him to decide on that. The court had accepted our whip, our group leader. Did the court do it without considering these facts? If our constitution of 2018 was not accepted, then how come these traitors were elected in 2019? On which symbol? He had no perogative to decide on this. We had submitted our constitution to the Election Commission. How can the Assembly Speaker decide whether we should have Shiv Sena chief or Shiv Sena party chief? It is our decision.
On Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde
These people want to win elections and are seeking time. But the people of Maharashtra will not accept Shinde’s Sena. Even a kid in Maharashtra knows, whom does Shiv Sena belong to. Shinde’s Sena cannot be the real Shiv Sena… The order was a fixed match, based on the manner in which Speaker and the CM met, how Prime Minister’s tour is planned on Janaury 12 and how CM’s Davos tour is being organised, later this month. It was nothing but a match fixing.
On future
I am ready and will fight against this injustice. The speaker has brought an unnecessary trouble on himself. The people have risen in anger and they will not accept it. If Eknath Shinde thinks that he has challenged the nepotism, let me tell him that his slavery has begun.
