As Cyclone Shakhti intensified into a ‘severe’ storm, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Sunday predicted partly cloudy skies, and light to moderate levels of rainfall in Mumbai and its suburbs. A similar forecast was issued for the Thane and Raigad districts as well; however, for the Palghar district, chances of heavy rainfall have been predicted on October 8.

This comes as scientists from the weather agency maintain that the cyclone poses no threat to the Maharashtra coasts as of now, evident in Mumbaikars going about their day as usual early Sunday.

However, fisherfolk in some coastal areas of the city demanded fair compensation for damages from the Maharashtra government as IMD’s advisory to stay away from Northwest Arabian Sea region till Tuesday have led to a significant impact on their livelihoods due to loss of employment.

Here are the top 5 updates about Cyclone Shakhti:

'No threat to coasts of Maharashtra at present', IMD scientists maintain

The IMD scientists have maintained that Cyclone Shakhti poses no threat to the coasts of Maharashtra at present. As the storm, a first to develop in the North Indian Ocean basin in 2025, has moved significantly away from the Indian coast, there is no direct threat to the west coast.

On Saturday, it predicted that Mumbai was unlikely to experience heavy or moderate rainfall activity in the next few days. “Even though a cyclonic formation has developed in the Arabian Sea, it is still very far from Mumbai. Therefore, as of now, there is no chance that Mumbai, along with the interiors of Maharashtra, will witness heavy rainfall activity. However, light spells of rain in the form of drizzle may continue for the next week,” said a senior IMD official.
