Customs nab four passengers at Mumbai airport, contraband worth Rs 12 crore seized

The arrested accused were identified as S Mohinani, 26, Imran Khan, 34, and A Khawaja and a woman, Saba Khan.

The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the customs department arrested four persons including a woman at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Thursday evening in three separate cases and allegedly seized smuggled hydroponic weed collectively valued at Rs 12 crore from them.

The arrested accused were identified as S Mohinani, 26, Imran Khan, 34, and A Khawaja and a woman, Saba Khan. Mohinani is a resident of Ulhasnagar, and Khan is from Thane while Khawaja and Saba Khan are from Chembur.

In the first case, AIU officials laid a trap and intercepted Mohinani on Thursday night once he arrived at the airport from Kuala Lumpur by Malaysia Airlines flight. His trolly bag was examined and it contained clothes and nine vacuum-sealed plastic packets. The vacuum-sealed plastic packets were stuffed with greenish-coloured substance in lumps form having a strong pungent smell which was tested using the field testing kit and the result came positive. The packets were containing hydroponic weed weighing 8,870 grams, valued at Rs 8.87 crore.

A case was registered against Mohinani under NDPS Act and he was arrested. The accused was getting a huge amount for smuggling the contraband. His handler is being searched, said a customs official.

In the second case, another team of the AIU nabbed passenger Khan on Friday in the wee hours while he was heading towards green gate on the basis of suspicion that he might be carrying some contraband. He arrived from Bangkok. During a search of his trolley bag, the officers found various types of chocolates, food items and toys. The officers removed the food items from the bag and found four plastic bags containing contraband substances purported to be hydroponic weed (Marijuana). The contraband was 2,003 grams valued at Rs 2 crore in the international market.

The third team of AIU intercepted two persons–47-year-old Saba Khan and her relative A Khawaja, 23, at the airport on the suspicion that they might be carrying some contraband items. Both came from Bangkok though Indigo flight. A personal search was conducted but nothing was found. A search of baggage was carried out and four packets were found inside the trolley bags. The accused were carrying contrabands inside the four packets weighing 2017 grams worth Rs 2.17 crore. Both were taken into custody and arrested under NDPS Act. The accused were aware that smuggling of hydroponic weed and other illegal drugs into India are banned and attract stringent punishment as per laws in the country.
