The Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the Mumbai Police is contemplating taking help of former peddlers to trap a Hyderabad-based drug supplier who is wanted since the arrest of 70-year-old alleged drug supplier Gangubai Kshirsagar in December last year.

Kshirsagar was arrested by the Bandra unit of the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) for alleged possession of narcotics worth Rs 10 lakh.

“After the arrest of Kshirsagar,we conducted enquiries and discovered that she had procured the narcotics from a source in Hyderabad,Andhra Pradesh. We had sent a team to Hyderabad but could not manage to trace the contact. We are now contemplating using the services of reformed peddlers, who sometimes assist us in our operations,to nab the Hyderabad contact,” an ANC officer said.

Though the official refused to reveal much,he said that the operation would revolve around the reformed peddler who would send out feelers in the drug market regarding obtaining a large quantity of narcotics. The cell hopes that the contact would take the bait and approach the peddler, enabling the police to trace and nab him.

The Bandra ANC unit had arrested Kshirsagar on December 19 with 40 kg of marijuana worth Rs 10 lakh. The ANC sleuths claim that Kshirsagar was one of the biggest drug suppliers in the city and had been involved in the narcotics trade for over a decade after her husband,a drug peddler himself, passed away.

Kshirsagar had two sons but one of them died around 5 years ago. Her other son and grandchildren live in Dombivali, where they run an indoor games facility. Kshirsagar had rented a small place near Kurla bus depot to store marijuana, the police said.

“She is a record-sheet drug supplier and has been arrested in the past by the ANC and the local police. In 2005,she was held with 50 kg marijuana and had served one-and-a-half years in prison for it,” said an ANC official. Kshirsagar is presently in judicial custody.
