The Mumbai police on Friday afternoon arrested two persons for allegedly cheating a Malad-based businessman of Rs 51.50 lakh on the pretext of selling him two high-end cars at throwaway prices.
Officers said that the businessman, Upendra Rai, 49, a resident of Yashodham in Goregaon (East), got in touch with the main and third accused, Xavier Fernandes, who is still at large, after he saw an advertisement to sell a BMW, placed in a popular online forum.
“The victim was looking to buy a BMW when he saw an advertisement on the website regarding a second hand model. He got in touch with Fernandes, and met him and Pooja Kumar a few days later to inspect the vehicle. The accused offered him another luxury car and he agreed to buy both,” said inspector Ravi Adane, Dindoshi police.
The officer said that the deal was finalised at Rs 51.50 lakh for both the cars. “Kumari coordinated with the victim and asked him to deposit the money in several bank accounts. We traced one of the accounts to a major bank in Bangalore,” said an officer.
Investigators said that when the cars never arrived the victim approached the police on November 6.
“We tracked John through his IP addresses location as he was the one sending the emails. He has a history of criminal offences. Subsequently, we tracked down Kumari as she was the one coordinating the bank transactions. However, we are still on the lookout out for the mastermind,” according to Adane.
