To address the escalating influx of patients on a daily basis at the Thane Municipal Corporation-run Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Memorial (CSMM) Hospital in Kalwa, where 18 patients died in a single day two days ago, Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar Tuesday announced that extra beds will soon be made available at the hospital. He also underscored the urgency of completing the renovation and expansion of the Thane Civil Hospital.
The CSMM hospital provides services to patients from the surrounding municipalities as well as rural areas. The hospital, with a 500-bed capacity, has been witnessing a 30 per cent rise in footfall of patients since the relocation of Thane district hospital for an expansion. “We can’t refuse admission to patients. So, we have decided to add additional beds to increase the strength to provide timely treatment,” said Bangar.
Meanwhile, to streamline administrative tasks, the corporation will fill up the vacant post of office superintendent who will be responsible for overseeing all administrative matters. On an urgent basis, an officer from Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) will be transferred to fill up the post.
The officer will be responsible for looking after matters related to establishment, accounts and academics—allowing the medical superintendent and medical director of the hospital to concentrate solely on enhancing patient care services and improvements.
Operating with limited staff, the CSMM hospital is facing challenges in delivering optimal patient care. This has been identified as the reason behind 18 patient deaths in a single day, a significant surge compared to the average daily fatality rate of approximately 6-7 deaths.
“While it will take some time to complete all the staff appointments,” he said. Already around 500 staffers who were on Covid duty have been reinstated at the hospital. Meanwhile, Bangar in a review meeting at the hospital emphasised that every patient must be provided with essential treatment, irrespective of their situation. The hospital’s doctors, nurses, ward attendants, and staff on rotational shifts should be readily accessible for patient care.
“He advised that existing staffers including specialists should remain available on duty. He also advised sharing contact information for doctors in case of any challenges with all department heads. He chalked down plans for efficient management of patients with available staffers,” said a doctor from the hospital.
The hospital has confirmed that two people died on Tuesday until the afternoon, but the total count for the rest of the day was still being compiled.
