About the project

The Elphinstone Bridge was constructed in 1913 and passes above the railway tracks. Over time, cracks and corrosion have emerged on the surface of the bridge, and the authorities have decided to pull it down and merge it with the proposed Sewri-Worli connector.

Features of the project

The new bridge will be a double-decker. While the lower deck will provide seamless east-west movement for local traffic, the upper deck will be part of the larger Sewri-Worli network. Each deck will have two vehicular lanes to ensure a smooth flow of traffic.

Status, cost and timeline

The cost of this bridge has been pegged at Rs 167 crore, and currently, the demolition work is underway. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is executing the project via Maha Rail and has set a 2027 deadline.
