Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has indicated that the Sheena Bora murder case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to pursue money-laundering allegations and related economic offences, if any.

“Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria had completed the inquiry into the case. So, there was no question of shifting him midway from the case,” he said. Moreover, even after he was promoted as the Director General of Police (Home Guards), the government had offered him to oversee the case, he said.
On the home department’s work in the last one year, Fadnavis said, “It would be wrong to link Maria’s promotion with the Sheena Bora case.”

He, however, refused to comment if Maria was taking extra interest in the high-profile case. As the police commissioner, one can oversee any case, he said.
The money-laundering charges too needed to be investigated, he said. “At that point, we felt the CBI should be given charge,” Fadnavis said.

The CM said the complete dossier on underworld don Chhota Rajan had already been forwarded to the Union home ministry.

Maintaining that the functioning of any home department cannot be viewed by the number of crimes committed, he said, “The greater effort is to … ensure quick justice.” The conviction rate has gone up from 9 to 42 per cent, he added.
