This year, over 1.3 lakh students have registered for admission to engineering diploma courses in Maharashtra, including five students who have scored a perfect 100 percent in Class 10 exam. This increase in number of applicants, including high scoring students, according to experts, indicates a growing demand for engineering diploma courses which can be pursued after passing Class 10.
As per the information shared by the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE), a total of 1,36,034 candidates have registered for the engineering diploma admissions this year, including 48,638 girls and 87,396 boys. While this is not a very increase from 1,28,459 candidates registered last year, it is a significant jump compared to academic year 2020-21 when 79,633 candidates had registered for the engineering diploma.
While there is a combination of factors leading to this continuously increasing demand for engineering diploma, according to experts, the biggest attraction is industry demand ensuring jobs, after completing this professional course, apart from MSBTE’s timely intervention to start new-age courses such Diploma in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Mechatronics, Robotics among others.
Shridhar Vaidya, secretary of Teachers Association for Non-Aided Polytechnic (TAFNAP), said, “MSBTE is reviewing engineering diploma curriculum every three years to ensure that the education aligns with the industry demands. Accordingly, we are seeing more demand for new-age courses as opposed to historic crowd-pullers such as civil engineering and mechanical engineering. Students coming to pursue diploma are aware that they are more in demand in the industry as unlike engineering degree holders, they are not at the managerial levels, making it easier to bag jobs, especially with training in new-age technologies.”
Additional benefit for students to pursue engineering diploma is convenient admission process and more affordable option of professional education.
Principal of one of the polytechnic institutes said, “Compared to engineering degrees, diploma is affordable. Students do not have to go through any entrance procedure as admission is easily possible based on Class 10 marks. While there are jobs available for diploma holders, they also have the option to further pursue engineering with direct second year admission.”
