Two days after a BMW allegedly ran over two Ganesh mandal volunteers, killing one of them in Maland, a court here Monday remanded the driver of the car in police custody till Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the condition of one of the two victims, Prasad Patil (38), remains critical, police said.
Patil and his colleague, Pritam Thorat, were atop scaffolding setting up banners at a Ganesh mandal when the accident occurred. While Thorat succumbed to his injuries on the same day, Patil is admitted to Jupiter Hospital in Thane.
The accused, who was driving the car at the time of the incident, Shakti Alagh, was arrested from Navi Mumbai. Senior Inspector Madan Patil of the Navghar Police Station stated, ” Alagh was produced before the court and was remanded to police custody for one day.”
The officer said they are awaiting his blood test reports but prima facie he does not appear to have driven the vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
The officer added that Prasad Patil continues to remain critical at the Jupiter hospital. “There has been slight improvement in his health, however he is still critical,” the officer added.
The incident occurred around 4 am on Saturday near the Ganesh mandap of the Mulundcha Raja Ganesh Mandal in Gavanpada, Mulund (East).
Alagh informed the police that he had taken his BMW for a test drive after recent servicing. While driving, he crashed into the scaffolding where Patil and Thorat were working. After escaping from the spot, Alagh was eventually arrested by police in Kharghar.
