The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Thursday carried out an eviction drive to raze unauthorised structures at Chembur’s Hotel Eastern Plaza.
According to senior civic officials, the establishment was earlier served a notice, following an inspection by the fire brigade.
Situated along the Eastern Express highway in Chembur’s Vatsalatai Naik Nagar, the Eastern Plaza Hotel is a ground-plus-two storey commercial structure.
As per civic reports, the hotel had built several unauthorised structures within their premise, without any permission, including a 14-feet-tall lodging constructed using slabs, walls and asbestos cement sheet roofs.
The eviction drive was carried out over two days — while the demolition work commenced Wednesday and was completed on Thursday.
Data procured from the BMC showed that “80 per cent of the people on the upper floors” were evacuated from the premises.
“This operation was carried out with the help of 30 people and other necessary resources along with workers and officers of the ‘M’ West Division,” read a statement issued by the BMC.
To ensure a smooth conduct of the drive, the M/West ward officials, who inspected the drive, also deployed staff from the Nehru Nagar police station.
