A day after a pipeline supplying water from Tansa Lake ruptured in Powai, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that it completed the repair works on Saturday afternoon and has now commenced works on phase-wise restoration of water supply in the affected areas.

Owing to the burst of the 1,800 mm diameter water line on Friday, water supply in four municipal wards including areas like Dharavi, Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Andheri East, Vile Parle, Bandra and Santacruz had been affected between Friday and Saturday.

Around 1 pm on Friday, a massive leakage was reported in one of the pipelines that supplies water from Tansa Lake across four municipal wards. Seeking to avoid the wastage of water, the civic body shut the valves of the pipeline, affecting the water supply.

Soon thereafter, officials said that the leakage was contained and work on the repairs was undertaken on “war footing.”

Nearly 24 hours after the incident occurred and wreaked havoc in the vicinity, the BMC completed the repairs at 1.30 pm on Saturday. “Repairs were completed by 1.30 pm today and water supply to the affected area is now being restored in phases,” said the BMC in a statement.

In light of the repair works, while some areas reeled under low water pressure, other pockets witnessed a complete stoppage in supply.
