The Adarsh probe panel has identified eight benami flats in the controversial housing society as belonging to the brother of Ajay Sancheti,a Rajya Sabha MP from BJP who is known to be a close aide of senior party leader Nitin Gadkari. The report names Abhay Sancheti (brother of Ajay Sancheti) and his M/S San Finance Corporation in Nagpur as the proxy owner for all eight flats.

The commission has named Suresh Atram,Sudhakar Madke,Rajesh Bora,Jagdishprasad Sharma,Parmanand Hinduja,Manilal Thakur,Paramhans Ram,Col late Amarjitsingh and Kiran Bhadange as the benami holders who have been financed by Sancheti’s firm.

When the Adarsh flats were being allotted,Atram and Madke earned a modest salary of less than Rs 9,000 working as driver and peon, respectively. Both were employed with the Nagpur-based SMS Infrastructure Ltd whose chairman is Abhay and non-executive vice-chairman is Ajay Sancheti. Bora is Abhay’s brother-in-law.

When contacted,Abhay Sancheti denied to The Indian Express that he or his firm were proxy owners for the eight flats. “We lent money to Madke,Atram and Bora due to our personal relationship with them so that they could buy the flats for themselves,” he said. He added that the rest were loaned money in order to oblige society members from the defence forces at the behest of R C Thakur,Adarsh society’s chief promoter and a former defence estate officer. Thakur’s son’s father-in-law J P Sharma is also on the list.
