A wet-lease electric bus of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) met with a minor accident near Ansari Chowk in Byculla Tuesday. No casualties were reported in the incident.

The incident happened around 1.15 pm when the bus was en route from Nana Chowk to Jijamata Udyan.

The incident unfolded when the bus was taking a right turn towards Ismail Merchant Chowk at Byculla Bridge. A biker suddenly appeared in front of the bus, prompting the driver to veer towards the right.

This movement caused the roof-mounted battery of the electric bus to scrape against a horizontal pillar of an under-construction bridge parallel to the Byculla bridge.

Probe underway to ensure safe ops

The impact led to smoke emanating from the battery.

The driver, acting swiftly, parked the bus aside and used the fire extinguisher to prevent the smoke from escalating into a fire.

“The Command and Control Centre of BEST Traffic was promptly informed. An investigation into the incident is underway to assess the circumstances and ensure the safety of ongoing operations,” said BEST in their official statement.
