In an effort to widen the Mithi River and alleviate traffic congestion, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has embarked on a project to demolish and construct a new bridge linking Bandra and Dharavi over the Mithi River. The first phase of the bridge works is set to be completed by November 30. While the entire bridge is expected to be fully completed by December 2027, the arm along the west side of the bridge will be ready by next month, contributing to smoother traffic flow.

About the project

As a part of the Mithi River basin widening initiative, the civic body has commenced the reconstruction of the existing bridge between Bandra and Dharavi, which passes over the Mithi River.

The bridge starts near the Jio World Drive Road junction along the Western Express Highway and extends toward Dharavi, approximately 110 meters south of the Mithi River basin.

The reconstruction will occur in two phases: In the first phase, the BMC is undertaking work abutting the existing bridge on the west side of the structure. In the second phase, work will be done on the eastern side abutting the bridge while simultaneously demolishing and reconstructing the existing structure.

According to municipal officers, the plan is to first set up two new structures to reroute existing traffic, after which the current bridge will be demolished and rebuilt.

Bridge structure and alignment

Once completed, the bridge will feature a vehicular carriageway expanded to 10 lanes. The total length of the bridge will be 198 metres. The superstructure will be constructed from composite steel with steel girders, while the bridge deck will be made from concrete.

Timeline of the project

Over the next two months, the BMC has set a deadline to complete the first phase on the western side of the bridge. Meanwhile, the work order for the second phase is likely to be issued, with an estimated timeline of 18 months. The total project is likely to be completed by December 2027.
