The widow of former Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Baba Siddique, who was shot dead in October last year, has moved the Bombay High Court seeking a court-monitored probe by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) or an independent agency.

In her petition, Shezeen Siddique has alleged that the investigation conducted by Nirmal Nagar police station in Bandra (East) was “misleading”, left “half-way” and “later abandoned to save the persons involved in the murder.” She has also sought a direction to the police to place on record the current status of the probe. The HC is expected to hear the plea next week.

Siddique was shot dead by three assailants outside his son Zeeshan’s office in Bandra (East) on October 12 last year.

Filed through advocate Trivankumar Karnani, the petition states that the police have “failed to collect the incriminating material against the builder lobby from the petitioner, her family and other persons who have remained present or who are the party to the meetings of the deceased Baba Siddique with the builder lobby and other concerned material.”

“The entire investigation stops at Anmol Bishnoi (brother of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi) without going to the root of the truth and against the charge-sheeted accused,” the plea says.

Shezeen has claimed she possesses “crucial material in the nature of WhatsApp messages and recordings,” but the police “intentionally” avoided recording her statement “to not bring the role of real culprits on record.”

She further contends the material with her “raises a strong suspicion about the involvement of the lobby of the builders and developers involved in the development of the slum areas within the assembly constituency of deceased Baba Siddique,” adding that her husband, who safeguarded slum dwellers’ interests, “was a big hurdle in the way of the main builders and developers… interested in developing the said area under SRA.”

The plea alleges that this angle was not examined by the police.

Shezeen has also alleged that the suspected offenders have “strong political links with the ruling party in Maharashtra,” and has urged the court to transfer the probe to a police force from another state “which claims no affiliation to the ruling party in Maharashtra.”

The petition states that on July 15 last year, Siddique received a threat message from developer Prithvijeet Rajaram Chavan, after which he sought security cover.

She also refers to the August 1 clashes between residents of Sant Dnyaneshwar Nagar and Kherwadi police, in which Zeeshan intervened on behalf of locals. Following this, the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) registered what she terms a “false” FIR against him. At that time, the plea claims, Ashok Munda, an associate of builder Mohit Kamboj, used derogatory language against Siddique “in front of an assembly of persons.”

The petition states that Zeeshan had named builders Mohit Kamboj, Prithvijeet Chavan, Ashok Mundra and Vijay Thakkar, among others, in his statement to the police. However, “no investigation whatsoever has been done from the said point of view.”

“The entire investigation revolves around the logic that Anmol Bishnoi has committed murder of Baba Siddique to take revenge… The said conclusion has to be said as a misleading conclusion unless the reason for taking the revenge… is brought on record. The same is conspicuously absent,” the plea asserts.

The petition also notes that only in August this year did the family, through an RTI reply from the Union Ministry of External Affairs, learn that a request for the extradition of Anmol Bishnoi had been initiated with US authorities on November 11, 2024.
