The city saw the second hottest May day in a decade on Sunday when the mercury soared to 36.2 degrees Celsius at Colaba. Officials from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) have forecast that temperatures would remain as high as 34 degrees in the next 48 hours.
The maximum temperature recorded at Santacruz on Sunday was 34.8 degrees Celsius, 1.3 degrees above normal, while Colaba experienced 36.2 degrees Celsius,2.3 degrees above normal.

Meteorologists attributed the high temperature to the northwesterly winds. “Winds are westerly to northwesterly. In summer, land gets heated, so when winds are northwesterly- coming from land-the temperature shoots up. Such high temperatures can be expected for the next 3-4 days, said Ajay Kumar, IMD Mumbai director
The hottest May days in the decade were recorded on May 1 and May 10 of 2010, when the mercury touched 37 degrees Celsius.
Even the minimum temperatures were above normal with Colaba recording 29.3 degrees Celsius, 1.9 degrees above normal, and Santacruz recording 29.7 degrees Celsius, 2.4 degrees above normal.
On Sunday, Colaba saw relative humidity of 70 per cent, while Santacruz saw a relative humidity of 64 per cent.
The all time record for the hottest May day was 41 degrees Celsius, which was recorded on May 12, 1979.
