With the monsoon expected to arrive in Mumbai in a week, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday took a review of the flood mitigation measures in Andheri that has been kept in place in the absence of Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge, which at present, is being reconstructed.
The Gokhale Bridge is a primary east-west connector, and in its absence motorists will have to avail the Andheri subway, which is infamous for its flooding woes during the monsoon.
Civic officials on Saturday said that six dewatering pumps have been set up inside the subway to ensure there is no traffic blockage due to heavy water-logging.
Each of these pumps will have a capacity to flush out 3,000 cubic meters of water in an hour.
Civic officials also said that the entire bridge will be made operational by December end. “The BMC and railways are coordinating towards planning a future mega block during the girder launching. We have also decided to install sound barriers for curbing the sound from the construction site, knowing there are residential buildings nearby. We are working towards making the entire bridge operational by year end,” said civic officials.
Alongside this, civic officials were also instructed to carry out road surfacing works continuously to ensure potholes does not emerge on them and lead to traffic obstruction.
