Former Home Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (SP) leader Anil Deshmukh was injured after his car was allegedly attacked near Belphata on the Jalalkheda Road near Katol in Nagpur district late Monday, police said.

According to police, the incident took place around 8 pm when unidentified persons threw stones at his car while he was returning after addressing an election rally in Narkhed of Katol Assembly constituency in Nagpur district, where his son Salil is contesting.

Deshmukh, who sustained injuries during the attack, was immediately rushed to the Katol Civil Hospital from where he was later shifted to Alexis Hospital, police said.

Confirming the incident, Nagpur Rural Superintendent of Police, Harssh Poddar, said senior officers were rushed to the spot. “An investigation has begun. Police are trying to identify those responsible for the attack,” he said.

In a video released after the attack, Deshmukh is seen injured, with blood dripping from his forehead. He is heard saying that the attackers were from the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP), which the party rejected. BJP’s Charan Thakur, contesting against Salil Deshmukh, termed it a drama.

Strongly condemning the incident and demanding action, NCP(SP) MP Supriya Sule said, “Such kind of violence during the polls was never in the nature of Maharashtra. This state trusts democratic values. But the BJP rule has destroyed the law and order in the state, especially in Nagpur. We condemn the incident and demand that the culprits be arrested soon.”—(With PTI)
