Andheri constable ‘who went into depression’ after wife and children left his home dies by suicide

The police said the constable had since gone into depression, stopped going to work, and was staying in the police quarters on the Andheri station's premises with his fatherAccording to police, they received information on Sunday afternoon that a man had made objectionable remarks about the leaders of a sect on his WhatsApp status message.

A 45-year-old police constable allegedly died by suicide in Andheri on Saturday. Attached to the Local Arms (LA-4) division in Marol, Andheri (East), he had not reported for duty for the last two months, the police said, adding that they found a suicide note from the police quarters where he had lived with his parents, wife, and two children.

According to the police, the constable’s wife had for the past two months been staying at her parent’s home along with her son and daughter, studying in Classes 9 and 7 respectively, owing to his excessive drinking habit and other family issues.

The police said the constable had since gone into depression, stopped going to work, and was staying in the police quarters on the Andheri station’s premises with his father, who had retired as an assistant sub-inspector.

On Saturday, his body was found after he failed to come out of his room for several hours. He was rushed to Cooper Hospital, where he was declared dead, said a police officer.

Earlier, the constable was attached to the wireless department, but he was transferred to LA-4 at Marol in April. He was also reportedly suffering from tuberculosis, said a police officer.

The Andheri police have registered an accidental death report in connection with the incident.
