At least three persons, including ‘designer’ Aniksha Jaisinghani and her father Anil Jaisinghani’s brother in law, were detained from Ulhasnagar in Mumbai, a day after The Indian Express reported that Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s wife Amruta has filed an FIR alleging a bribe attempt by the father-daughter duo seeking her “intervention” in a criminal case.

According to Mumbai police, searches were also conducted early Thursday morning.

Alleging threat and conspiracy, Amruta Fadnavis had on February 20 filed a First Information Report with the police against Aniksha, who she alleges, tried to bribe her with Rs 1 crore to get her father off the hook in a police case. The FIR stated that Aniksha allegedly offered to provide Amruta information on some bookies through which they could earn money and then directly offered Rs 1 crore as bribe.

On Thursday, days after the FIR was filed, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis spoke on the issue after the Leader of Opposition Ajit Pawar sought clarification from him in the state Legislative Assembly. He opened up about the case, “a trap”, a video of a money bag and a threat to ruin his political career.

In the FIR, Amruta had said that on February 18 and 19, the designer sent her video clips, voice notes and many messages from an unknown phone number. She also complained of the woman and her father indirectly “threatening and conspiring” against her.

The police have registered a case against Aniksha and her father under Section 120 (B) (conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 8 and 12 of Prevention of Corruption Act 1988. Section 8 relates to using corrupt and illegal means to “induce” a public servant, Section 12 is for abetment.

Meanwhile, Anil Jaisinghani, who has 17 cases registered against him, was arrested thrice in betting cases and is wanted in over seven cases in five states.

He continued to be on the run citing poor health and eight months later applied for a transit bail in the Bombay High Court. Two police stations in Mumbai, Azad Maidan and Sakinaka, registered cases of cheating and forgery against him in 2016.
