Amid reports of fissures in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) Opposition alliance in Maharashtra, leaders of the Shiv Sena (UBT), the Nationalist Congress Party (SP) and the Congress are set to address a joint press conference in Mumbai on Saturday.

The press conference – the first after the Opposition bloc put up a commendable performance in the Lok Sabha elections by winning 31 out of the 48 seats in the state – will be addressed by Shiv Sena UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray, Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat and NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar.

Following the Lok Sabha elections, differences have cropped up between the Congress and the Shiv Sena (UBT) over the upcoming polls for the four Legislative Council seats — Mumbai and Konkan graduates constituency and Nashik and Mumbai teachers constituency — scheduled to be held on June 26.

State Congress president Nana Patole had openly expressed his displeasure after the Shiv Sena (UBT) announced candidates for all four seats, allegedly without consulting the Congress and the NCP (SP), and demanded that the party withdraw candidates from the Nashik and Konkan seats. A verbal spat between Patole and Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Sanjay Raut also took place.

However, later, Uddhav put an end to the disgruntlement saying the issue was resolved amicably with both sides reaching a pact on the Konkan and Nashik seats.

Later, however, Patole claimed that the Congress had emerged as the dominant Opposition party in the Lok Sabha polls and asserted that the party would contest 150 out of the 288 seats in the upcoming Assembly polls. Patole further said that the Congress was also prepared to contest all 288 seats.
