Senior Congress leader and former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday said that the rebellion of NCP leader Ajit Pawar is a part BJP’s effort to weaken the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance after realising that the BJP was not registering victories in other states. He also said that BJP’s “next target” could be Congress.
“Ram temple at Ayodhya is unlikely to make electoral gains for the BJP. The BJP is also facing defeat in upcoming elections in Hindi belt of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh. BJP is also finding it difficult to gain votes in the name of Narendra Modi. Therefore, Maharashtra being the state with second highest number of Lok Sabha seats is being targeted and focus is on weakening the MVA,” Chavan said.
He was speaking at the Lok Samvad organised by Loksatta. Chavan said that the ultimate model opposition should use to defeat PM Modi is of 1977 when all opposition parties came together against Indira Gandhi. “Jayaprakash Narayan brought all together. There was no prime ministerial face.
Despite that the opposition front won big. Even now, if opposition gives one against one candidate then BJP can be defeated,” he said.
Chavan claimed that Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar will have to give order on disqualification petitions by August 10 which marks completion of 90 days of Supreme court order on Sena tussle.
“The split in the NCP is at the promise of making Ajit Pawar as CM. However a section within the BJP and RSS is opposed to it.
Commenting on Ajit Pawar, Congress leader said that BJP had been holding several meetings with Ajit. “The NCP was witnessing power and leadership struggle. Praful Patel had refused to work under Supriya Sule. BJP has realised that elections cannot be won under Eknath Shinde,” he said. Chavan accepted that BJP’s next target could be Congress in Maharashtra.
“Shiv Sena and NCP are regional parties. The next target could be us. Few of our MLAs had been contacted but we are sure that no such thing will happen in Congress,” he said.
