The decision to join the Maharashtra government was based on the current social and political situations in the state, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said Tuesday in his open letter to mark the completion of 100 days in the ruling dispensation.
In his letter, which did not mention his uncle and NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar said, “In the past, big political leaders have taken decisions with different political stands in the history of Maharashtra’s politics. The existing social and political situations force political leaders to make such decisions. The NCP under my leadership had taken a similar decision to join the government on July 2, 2023,” he said while referring to his rebellion against Sharad Pawar.
Ajit Pawar also laid claim to the legacy of Maharashtra’s first chief minister late Yashavantrao Chavan, whom the elder Pawar considers his political mentor. This is being seen as a step to counter the diktat issued by Sharad Pawar by using Chavan’s photos on banners and posters and also mentioning him as his idol.
After Ajit Pawar’s rebellion, Sharad Pawar had barred his supporters from using his photographs on banners and posters.
“I have said many times that (Maharashtra’s first chief minister) late Yashavantrao Chavan’s motto of ‘supporting Bahujans through power and answerability towards people’ is my inspiration”.
“With this in mind, our Nationalist Congress Party will work in the government on the principle of ‘commitment towards development and ideology of Bahujans’ (Vasa Vikasafha aani Vichar Bahujanancha),” Ajit said in the letter.
The letter also described him as the national president of the NCP.
At the beginning of his letter, Ajit wrote that under his leadership the NCP will continue to walk on the path of ideas of social reformers like Mahatma Phule, Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, and B R Ambedkar. He said the NCP considers Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as its idol and has preserved the legacy of welfare policies.
Ajit said he and his colleagues will continue to work for public welfare and resolve the issues concerning them. “The work of me and my colleagues in the near future will prove that the NCP is actively working to protect the interests of Maharashtra’s farmers, youth, women and different social groups,” he added.
He said the NCP will also work on issues like unemployment, economic strengthening, education, health and effective implementation of welfare schemes through the state government.
Claiming he always takes note of positive criticism, Ajit said he never indulges in criticism for the sake of politics.
“I believe in positive and developmental politics. Completing the work undertaken and bringing positive difference in the lives of people through that is my style of functioning,” he said.
